A Reflection After Easter

Well, that's it.   Easter's done.   Now it’s back to work, or school, or whatever.

So for those having a rest after the rigours of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter - and for those who aren’t - here’s a relaxing reflection…

Jesus said "I am the bread of life. The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." (John 6. 33)    Jesus himself is that bread.    It seems a strange thing to say nowadays:  bread isn't the vital thing it was in 30AD:  we have cheese, and cod, and lasagne, and Kate and Sidney pie and all the rest.

Back then, bread was the "staple food".   That's what most people ate, and it was essential for life.   What Jesus was saying is "I'm as essential for life as food is.    You may think you can live without me, but you really can’t."   And, of course, most of them said "Oh yes we can".   Just as people do today.

But … Jesus challenges us:  yes or no.    We have to decide which way to reply -- there's no "maybe".   We can't put it off and decide later.

We don't have to be super-religious or spiritual or pious or special to be "for Jesus".   We can be sceptical, confused, cynical, unsure, afraid, worried -- Jesus accepts us as we are, and loves us, and responds to us and calls us. That's what Easter was all about, in the final analysis.

We all have to make the choice sooner or later.  Are we for, or against Jesus?   There's no middle ground.  We can't "wait and see".

Yes, of course we can change our minds and turn to Jesus at any time.      Any time up to the moment before we die.    But we don't know when that will be:  so take a tip -- do it now!
