Joel 2:28-32 God's plan for all people
28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved;
Wait! There’s more! God has something in store for his people that will blow religion out of the water, that will curdle the brain cells of the Pharisee and astound and dumbfound the scoffer. From time to time, God had placed his Holy Spirit on certain people – prophets, kings, judges (but not all of them). But now he is announcing that the Holy Spirit is to be poured out on all people. All people includes you and me, without exception.
What is God doing?! Surely, this is a gift beyond measure. What a privilege to have that connection with Father God through his Holy Spirit upon you. I don’t know how Joel felt about saying this, because it is the most preposterously generous gift that God is offering.
Little did Joel know that this gift would be connected to the gift that all Jews were hoping for – the arrival of their promised Messiah.
Peter, definitely now an apostle, quoted from this book on the day of Pentecost, after the same Holy Spirit had landed on and taken up residence in him. He was no orator, nor was he learned in theology – he was a fisherman, and he knew about the price of fish. Jesus had gone back to heaven, and now the same Holy Spirit, promised by Father God and by Jesus, had taken hold of Peter, and enabled him to speak with power, authority and wisdom, to the extent that many people that day became believers.
How does your church fellowship treat visions and dreams, or visioners and dreamers?
Which is more effective, a quality sermon, or something miraculous followed by an explanation and an altar call?
Has Joel 2:28/Acts 2:17 been fulfilled in your life?
Father God, your covenant promises form the golden thread through the Old Testament, and their fulfilment are seen in my Lord Jesus Christ and in his Church. Lead me and my church fellowship, I pray, into the full realisation of and enabling to be the people you have made us to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Lord, send your Holy Spirit:
