Our Advent Reflections

Advent 2025 Daily Reflections – A plunge into Mark’s Gospel

Starting Sunday 30 November

Dear Friends,

I’ve selected the opening few chapters of Mark’s Gospel. You might call Mark the fastest Gospel of all. While Matthew and Luke give us Jesus’ birth, and John’s account engages us in long reflective passages and conversations, Mark is up and running from its opening verses with the adult, all-action Jesus. Within the space of a few chapters, he’s already a marked man.

Mark offers us “good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God”. Matthew starts with a long list of ancestors, Luke can’t get started until he has explained his intentions to “Theophilus” and then sets about telling us about the birth of John before he gets to Jesus! John has a beautiful introductory section, both mystical and crystal-clear, but Mark lays out his stall in just one verse.

Our YouTube selection consists of Advent hymns, some old, some new. You may like to ponder each one as you watch and listen, comparing the expectation contained in them with the Jesus revealed in our readings,

With Blessings,

Paul
